The America Nepal Society (ANS) hosted its monthly Meet & Greet event on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at Tandoori Restaurant in Fairfax, VA. The gathering featured an array of distinguished speakers who shared their experiences, insights, and aspirations for fostering community engagement and development in Nepal and the U.S.
Somnath Ghimire, President of the Girija Prasad Koirala Foundation America, highlighted his organization’s contributions, including distributing food boxes during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also shared success stories of providing legal aid to detained Nepalis and empowering immigrant communities through education and civic engagement. Ghimire’s “Digital Bridges for Nepal” initiative, which aims to bring digital education to all 77 districts in Nepal by 2035, was a central focus of his remarks.
Sasha Taylor, a consultant and former FBI analyst, discussed her work addressing gender-based violence and human trafficking within South Asian communities. She shared updates on her advocacy for legal reforms in Virginia, including a proposed statute addressing honor violence, and her ongoing efforts to train law enforcement and NGOs to combat these issues. Sasha’s commitment to raising awareness and fostering collaboration inspired attendees to take action.
Miss KC, a New York-based cinematographer, shared her enthusiasm for engaging with the Nepali-American community. She emphasized the role of social media in amplifying community initiatives and the importance of youth participation in cultural and civic activities. Her call to action for greater collaboration with elected leaders and fostering unity left a lasting impression.
Dr. Tara Niraula, an academic and visionary leader, presented the ambitious plans for the University of Nepal, a public-private institution aimed at providing world-class education. He outlined the university’s governance, funding strategies, and interdisciplinary focus, inviting diaspora members to contribute ideas and resources. Dr. Niraula’s vision for a research-oriented institution resonated with attendees, who were encouraged to support this transformative initiative.
Sharad Raj Aran, Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. & Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Nepal, praised ANS’s legacy of cultural exchange and intellectual dialogue, emphasizing Nepal’s entrepreneurial growth and the need for mentorship and investment in its tech and e-commerce sectors. He urged American professionals to engage with Nepal through business forums and collaborative projects, strengthening the bilateral partnership.
Richard Sellers, ANS 1st Vice President, detailed the Friends of Nepal’s recent projects, including climate-resilient agriculture and eco-tourism initiatives. He highlighted the positive impact of ANS’s contributions and encouraged continued support for developmental projects that address climate change, education, and livelihoods in Nepal.
Kamal Bhushal reflected on his early community involvement and the lasting impact of initiatives like the 2008 Ambassador Cup Soccer Tournament. He underscored the importance of continuing traditions that unite and empower the Nepali-American community through sports and collaborative efforts.
The event concluded with networking and a renewed commitment to fostering unity, cultural exchange, and progress in both Nepal and the United States. ANS’s dedication to hosting meaningful events continues to inspire collective action and community growth.
